Thousands of foreign-born residents become American citizens every day in naturalization ceremonies held throughout the country. Each of these people has a unique story of heartbreak, hope, loss and triumph to tell. American Ese is the chronicle of one such story:

This one-man show is framed around the real-time citizenship ceremony of a certain Dario Gonzalez, an El Salvadoran immigrant who came to California as a young boy. A series of flashbacks - at times hysterically funny, profoundly moving and sharply observant of the human condition - reveals the price Gonzalez paid to be able to take U.S. citizenship.

While American Ese is at once a deeply personal story of addiction, recovery and making peace with a painful family history, it smartly illuminates the plight so many thousands of Latino immigrants face as they strive for that most American of ideals: The pursuit of happiness.
